Three Decades of Preserving Nordic Song

From a small Danish town to choral enthusiasts across the UK, see how Sangforeningen Cor Cantus became a bridge between Scandinavian heritage and British voices.

Founded in the Heart of Denmark

In 1992, conductor Mette Nielsen started Sangforeningen Cor Cantus in Lemvig, a town of 6,800 on the Limfjord in northwestern Jutland. What began as a local ensemble focused on Danish choral traditions has grown into an international resource for singers seeking authentic Scandinavian music.

The ensemble early on specialized in finding forgotten Danish choral manuscripts from rural church archives around Jutland. Working with local historians and church authorities, Cor Cantus discovered and transcribed works that had been silent for decades, bringing new life to compositions by lesser-known Danish composers from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Our rehearsal home at Lemvig Church, with its 13th-century stone walls and great acoustics, was the perfect spot for exploring these rediscovered works. The church's whitewashed interior and wooden pews became a familiar backdrop for recordings that later formed the foundation of our digital archive.

Bridging the North Sea

In 2019, the ensemble embarked on an ambitious digitisation project, recognising the growing international interest in Nordic choral traditions. What began as a preservation effort for our local community evolved into a resource for singers worldwide.

The UK initiative launched in 2023 following numerous inquiries from British choral directors who had discovered our recordings online. We recognised that the sophisticated choral tradition in the UK provided an ideal audience for our educational approach to Scandinavian repertoire.

Our adaptation process involved reimagining in-person Danish workshops for online delivery to UK participants. Through filmed rehearsals at Lemvig Church and live-streamed coaching sessions, we maintain the intimacy and authenticity of our traditional teaching methods while serving a geographically dispersed audience.
